Our Levels of Care

There is no “one size fits all” solution in treatment. Getting help for addiction isn't the same for everyone. People have different needs because of other health problems, experiences of trauma, troubles at home or with relationships, problems at work, legal issues, and more. Quality, holistic treatment looks at all these things plus personal details like your age, gender identity, ethnicity, race, and culture.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) has made a set of guidelines called Levels of Care to help decide the best way to help someone, whether they're just starting treatment, need to stay longer, move to a different type of support, or are ready to graduate from a treatment program. Knowing about the different Levels of Care makes it easier for you and our team to choose the right kind of supportive services that best meet your needs.

Empower Treatment uses the ASAM toolkit to take into account what you're dealing with, your health, your personal strengths, and the support systems you have. Here are the different Levels of Care we offer, and how long you can expect to be engaging in each one:

Level 1.0 - Outpatient Program (OP)

This is the first step of help for people who have less severe issues with addiction and mental health barriers. It's also what you might move to after you've had more intense help and are doing better but still need some ongoing support. It's best for those who have a good place to live that supports their recovery, are healthy in body and mind, and aren't at risk of having a hard time without the substance or addictive behavior. You get up to 9 hours a week of help at this level.

At a 1.0 Level of Care, you can get help through different activities like talking one-on-one with a counselor, joining group sessions, getting motivated to stay on track, working on family relationships, learning in groups, doing job-related activities, enjoying hobbies in healthy ways, talking through your feelings (psychotherapy), sometimes using medicines to help, and so much more. At Empower Treatment, you can expect to be engaging in our Level 1 program for at least 12 weeks, or longer if you desire more ongoing support!

Level 2.1 - Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

This level gives you more support, between 9 to 19 hours every week. It's like the help you get in the first step (Level 1), but a bit more intense to match your needs. You can get this help during the day, in the evenings, or even on weekends, depending on what works best for you. It's all from our team of experts who specialize in helping people with addiction and mental health barriers.

If you also need help with mental health or medical issues, they'll connect you with the right specialists. Whether you need advice over the phone quickly (within 24 hours) or a face-to-face meeting (within 72 hours), our specialists make sure you get the support you need when you need it. At Empower Treatment, you can expect to be engaging in our Level 2.1 program for at least 12-24 weeks depending on your needs!

Level 2.5 - Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

This level is for when you need a lot of support, with 20 hours or more every week. It's called day treatment because you get help during the day but don't stay overnight, kind of like going to a hospital but going home at night. This help is more intense than what you'd get in Level 2.1 and includes a wide range of services right when you need them. This includes medical care, mental health support, and emergency help from experts.

Our Level 2.5 Partial Hospitalization Program is really good for people whose health, addiction, or mental state is very up and down and who need extra care. The help you get here is a lot like in Level 2.1, but it happens more often and is more thorough to make sure you're getting exactly what you need. The goal of our Level 2.5 program is to offer you stability as effectively, safely, and quickly as possible. At Empower Treatment, you can expect to be engaging in our Level 2.5 program for 12 weeks or more depending on your needs!

What about the other Levels of Care?

Empower Treatment strives to be the most accessible, low-barrier outpatient program in all of Ohio. We could offer residential and inpatient services, but that would keep us from specializing in what we do best. And as a member of our program, you deserve the very best.

If you require services above a 2.5 Level of Care, do not worry! We take the guesswork out of the equation by connecting and referring you to evidence-based programs that offer these higher Levels of Care:

  • Level 3.1 - Clinically Managed Low-Intensity Residential Services
  • Level 3.3 - Clinically Managed Population-Specific High-Intensity Residential Services
  • Level 3.5 - Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Services
  • Level 3.7 - Medically Monitored High-Intensity Inpatient Services
  • Level 4.0 - Medically Managed Intensive Inpatient Services

Empower Treatment made their Levels of Care easy to understand. They made me feel like I had a voice in the process too, like I was respected and my feedback made their program better."
